I'll assume Bangkok since I've been there and you're going there but you can modify this as you travel/discover. By home base I mean a lodging place that you feel comfortably in and can come and go as your schedule provides, should be close to a transport hub and with necessary/enjoyable amenities. Bangkok definately meets that criteria but is a BIG city, too intense and polluted for some (but I...eling (always moving) at some point gets a bit tiring and at that point you return for R&R at your homebase, until you are ready to move again. Talk to the other travelers you run into, up to date info and probably lots of destinations you might not have thought of, and possible traveling companions and treks.
Sounds like a great trip, post back if you can. I'm jealous, someday, someday...
